Can I use a fax machine with AT&T CallVantage service?

When you turn on Fax and Modem Support, you should be able to use AT&T CallVantage service with most commonly used fax machines and modems. With Fax and Modem Support:

  1. The service comes with Fax and Modem Support automatically turned off. You must turn Fax and Modem Support on through your Account Management & Settings page.
  2. There is no additional charge when you turn Fax and Modem Support on beyond any per-minute international calling charges, or charges for local toll or long distance calls if you are not on an unlimited nationwide calling plan.
  3. Fax and Modem Support works with all AT&T CallVantage service adapters.
  4. If you turn Fax and Modem Support on, a portion of your available data bandwidth will be reserved exclusively for data support. As a result, if your upstream speed is 125 Kbps or less, turning Fax and Modem Support on may reduce your voice call quality or data throughput (this is why your service comes with Fax and Modem Support turned off).
  5. Fax and Modem Support works with most commonly used fax machines as well as some other data services, including
    1. analog modems, including those embedded in consumer electronic devices
    2. personal video recorders (such as TiVo)
  6. If you have two phone lines, you need to turn Fax and Modem Support on or off for each line separately.
  7. After you turn Fax and Modem Support on or off, you will need to reboot your adapter. For additional information and instructions, see "How do I turn Fax and Modem Support on or off?"

Your AT&T CallVantage service 1st Line should be used for fax support if you only need to send faxes occasionally. We recommend you turn on Fax and Modem Support, send the fax, and then turn off Fax and Modem Support for best voice quality for all your calls.

When you have Fax and Modem Support turned on for your 1st Line, you may have difficulty dialing to and retrieving voice mail from the adapter phone on your 1st Line. Similarly, if you have it turned on for your 2nd Line, you may have difficulty retrieving voice mail from your 2nd Line phone. If this occurs, after you have completed your fax or data operation, you can turn Fax and Modem Support off to regain access to your voice mail. You can also retrieve voice mail messages from your AT&T CallVantage Service Home Page.

If you have Fax and Modem Support turned on, and you attempt to dial another AT&T CallVantage service customer who does not have Fax and Modem Support turned on, your call may not be completed normally. You should turn Fax and Modem Support off, then re-dial your call.

To ensure highest quality of phone service, if you need to use Fax and Modem Support regularly, AT&T recommends that you order a 2nd Line, turn Fax and Modem Support on for that line, and dedicate its use to your fax or modem requirements.
