Keeping your Number

Important Information about Phone Numbers and the AT&T CallVantage service

Back to List

Many Numbers Can Be Transferred to AT&T CallVantage Service

In many cases, as long as you have a broadband connection and AT&T CallVantage service is available, you can transfer the phone number on your current phone line to your AT&T CallVantage service.

Not all numbers can be transferred. For example:

  • If you are a DSL customer, you cannot transfer the number associated with your DSL line.
  • Wireless phone numbers cannot currently be transferred. We are working on enhancements to the service and expect to be able to transfer wireless numbers to AT&T CallVantage service in the near future.
  • Phone numbers that are not in the AT&T CallVantage service footprint cannot be transferred.

Transferring your Current Phone Number to AT&T CallVantage Service Is Easy

If you want to use your current phone number with your AT&T CallVantage service, all you need to do is request it when you place your AT&T CallVantage service order.

  • We will check our database to confirm your number can be transferred; if it can, we will send you an e-mail confirming that your number will be transferred and providing you a date for that transfer. We will also send your adapter.
  • In general it takes about 8-10 business days from the point you place your order until the day your number is transferred.
  • If your number cannot be transferred, we will send you an e-mail to inform you and your order will automatically be cancelled. You will, of course, have the option of ordering AT&T CallVantage service with a new phone number.

PRIOR TO THE DAY YOUR NUMBER IS TRANSFERRED

  • Approximately 4-5 business days after an AT&T representative confirms that your phone number can be moved to this service, you will receive the adapter. The adapter connects your high speed internet connection to your phone.

ONCE YOUR NUMBER IS TRANSFERRED

  • On the day that your number is transferred, beginning about 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, all inbound calls will be sent to your AT&T CallVantage service, and will no longer be sent to you former line (i.e. they will no longer be sent to the phone jacks in your wall). Your adapter will need to already be installed and working so you can continue to receive incoming calls seamlessly.
  • Until about midnight on the day your number is transferred, you may still be able to make outbound calls on the phone jacks in your wall.

You Must Not Call Your Local Phone Company to Cancel Your Existing Phone Number

Transferring your number to AT&T CallVantage service will automatically cancel your previous local, local toll, and long distance phone service. PLEASE DO NOT call your local phone company to cancel your current number yourself, in fact if you do so, this will make it impossible for us to transfer your current number to AT&T CallVantage service.

If you are transferring your telephone number to AT&T and decide to cancel AT&T CallVantage service

AT&T may not be able to cancel your request to transfer your existing number until AFTER the number has transferred to AT&T CallVantage service.

It is important that you activate your Telephone Adapter as soon as possible and prior to your number being transferred. When the number is transferred, the line it serviced will be disconnected. Unless you have installed and activated your Telephone Adapter, you will not have voice service for inbound or outbound calls to the telephone number when the old line is disconnected.

If after you are using AT&T CallVantage service, you wish to cancel, you can transfer your number back to your current provider. This transfer may take about 10 to 14 days.
