How is my phone number assigned to me?
When signing up for the service, depending on your location, you have the choice of having a new number assigned to you, or where possible, transferring an existing phone number to your AT&T CallVantage service.
Where is AT&T CallVantage service currently offered?
Anyone meeting the technical requirements for AT&T CallVantage service, regardless of their geographic location, can sign up for the service. AT&T will be rolling out service in additional geographies in the future.
Can I have an AT&T CallVantage service phone number in a different area code than my current home phone?
Yes, you can however its limited to where AT&T CallVantage with 911 service is available. When you sign up for the service you will be asked both what state you reside in and what state you want your phone number area code to be located in. You will still be able to place and receive calls at your home, but callers will assume the calls are coming from and going to the location defined by the area code and prefix you chose.
You can also sign up for a Simple ReachSM Number, which can be in any area code where AT&T CallVantage service is offered. Simple Reach Numbers can save friends and family money by giving them a phone number that's a local call to them that they can use to call you.
If my area code is different than my home area code, will I pay long distance charges for calls placed from my AT&T CallVantage service phone?
If you are on the AT&T CallVantage Service Plan, you can make unlimited local and long distance calls for a monthly flat rate (including calls to Canada, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) at no extra charge, regardless of your phone number area code or prefix.
If you are on the AT&T CallVantage Local Plan, any calls you make outside the local calling area of your AT&T CallVantage service primary phone number will be charged at an additional $0.04 per minute. If this number is outside of your local calling area, you will be assessed these charges.
Any international calls are billed at competitive per-minute rates.
If my AT&T CallVantage service area code is different than my home number area code, will people calling me be charged long distance charges?
Yes, they may be. When someone places a call to your phone number, it is treated as if they are calling a phone number in the area code of your AT&T CallVantage service phone. If this would be a long distance call for the caller, he or she will be billed for long distance charges.
Some area codes are overlays with other area codes, and calling from one area code to another isn't necessarily a long distance call. For example, in Atlanta, the 678 area code is an overlay with 770, and many calls from one to the other are still local calls.
Is it possible that callers will be charged toll charges for calling me even if they are in the same area code as my AT&T CallVantage service phone?
Again, they may be. Even if the area code is the same, the next three digits (the "exchange") of your number may be outside of the local calling region of the caller, and they would be subject to any toll charges associated with calling that exchange. You should check your phone book or with your local phone company to see which exchanges constitute a local phone call in your area, and what the toll charge rates for any calls outside your local calling area are.
How do I make local, long distance, or international calls?
You can dial anywhere you want in the United States by dialing the 10-digit phone number. Be aware that you have to call the full 10-digit phone number (including area code) even if you are making a local call. Direct dial international calls can be made by dialing 011, the country code, and the phone number. Note that unlimited local and nationwide calling (including calls to Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) is provided as part of the flat monthly price, and international calls are billed at competitive per-minute rates.
